Apprenticeships and Traineeships are a highly regarded and progressive pathway for young people who have an interest in trades, agriculture, health care and disability services, childcare, and hospitality pathways, just to name a few.
Young people can either commence while at school as part of their schooling, from as early as Year 10 through to the end of their HSC, or after leaving school as a part time or full time apprentice or trainee.
Students in NSW Schools can choose from a massive range of options. These depend on the availability of a workplace to employ a young person, a training provider to deliver the training, and the interests and desires of the young person.
Australian Apprenticeship Pathways has a helpful online guide to finding an apprenticeship with examples of potential career pathways that can begin with an Australian Apprenticeship.
School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT’s) are more than just a part time job, they are a great way to set yourself up for the career you want whilst you are completing your HSC. SBAT’s are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 high school students in NSW.
School Based Apprentices work part time and complete the first stage of their apprenticeship training by the end of the HSC.
School Based Trainees work part time and complete their formal traineeship training by the end of the HSC Year.
SBAT’s gain an industry recognised national qualification while gaining credit towards the HSC. Some apprenticeships and traineeships can contribute towards the ATAR.
Students and Parents who would like to know about year 11 and 12 options, the NSW Government have developed a well-resourced website covering all details on School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships, which are a great way of starting a building trade and other occupations such as childcare, nursing, finance, hairdressing, beauty therapy, and others as part of the HSC, and in many cases also count towards the ATAR.
